There are many benefits to volunteering, such has learning about the sport, spending time with great people, being in the majestic Central Coast outdoors and helping other's achieve their personal and athletic goals. For those new to the sport, volunteering is a great opportunity to learn the ropes. For experienced competitors, volunteering provides a chance to give back to the AR community while having a great time sharing experiences with other racers. For future competitors, volunteers who spend Five Hours volunteering earn a 50% discounted race entry into any of Nimble Creatives events. Volunteering is an event and an adventure in itself with varying skill types and skill levels. Assignments vary with your experience, interests and skill level.
Specific skills may include ropes course certification (usually involving ascending and rappelling), and emergency medicine. Volunteers accumulate skills with each new experience.
What do Adventure Race volunteers do?
In addition to registration, marshaling, aid stations, and “other duties”, adventure race volunteers assist in gear check-in, ropes sections and managing checkpoints (CPs). CPs are the points to which the racers acquire to complete the course. CP workers log in the competitors and sign the teams' passport to evidence their completion of the course. CP marshals also communicate with race officials, by two-way radio, to keep headquarters up to date with participants’ whereabouts and what's happening on the course. New volunteers are always paired with someone more experienced.
What should I bring?
Weather appropriate clothing, sunglasses, sun hat, warm clothes, water, reading material, snack food, day backpack, sunscreen, insect repellent, camp chair, camera, emailed volunteer information (containing directions, accommodations, etc.), enthusiasm, patience. Reading material is very important, as you may have several hours of downtime waiting for competitors.
Volunteer Credit Policy:
Volunteer credits are awarded only to registered volunteers. Volunteers must sign in and sign out at the race headquarters in order to receive their due credit. Children (under 18) are always welcome to volunteer as long as a parent or legal guardian accompanies them.
